Daljit Singh’s cremation remains on hold amid family differences

Bathinda: The cremation of Daljit Singh, a resident of Bhamme Kalan village in Punjab, could not take place on Saturday as differences among his family members over the last rites remained unresolved.

Daljit Singh died on October 27 after reportedly consuming an excessive quantity of drugs. After taking custody of his body, police conducted a postmortem at AIIMS Bathinda on October 29 with the consent of his father, Jarnail Singh.

Earlier, Jarnail Singh had appealed to his wife and Daljit’s wife to return home from the ongoing protest over the killing of Jhotta so that the family could perform the cremation and complete the last rites. However, the family has yet to reach an agreement.

Daljit’s wife, Paramjit Kaur, had warned that she would approach the Punjab and Haryana high court if the cremation was carried out against her wishes.

Meanwhile, Daljit’s sister, Amarjit Kaur, and other family members met Shiromani Akali Dal president Sukhbir Singh Badal in Chandigarh on Saturday. Badal expressed condolences and assured the family of legal assistance to help them seek justice.

In a post on X, Badal accused the police and administration of pressuring the family to reach a compromise. He said the Akali Dal would continue pursuing the matter until justice was delivered.
