1984 anti-Sikh violence victim Jagdish Kaur to join BJP conclave

Chandigarh: Amritsar resident Jagdish Kaur, whose testimony played a crucial role in the conviction of former Congress MP Sajjan Kumar in a 1984 anti-Sikh violence case, will be among the key participants at a BJP-organised conclave on the violence in Chandigarh on Wednesday.

Kaur’s testimony during a prolonged legal battle for justice helped secure the first conviction of the once-powerful Congress leader in connection with the killings.

On December 17, 2018, the Delhi High Court overturned a trial court verdict that had acquitted Kumar. He was accused of orchestrating the killings of Kaur’s husband and 18-year-old son in Delhi’s Palam Colony, Raj Nagar, on November 2, 1984, following the assassination of then prime minister Indira Gandhi on October 31.

Speaking about her long struggle for justice, Kaur said the legal battle had been deeply painful and that the system had repeatedly tried to break her resolve.

She alleged that she had been offered ₹8 crore, a plot of land and settlement abroad in exchange for withdrawing the case against Kumar.

“I told them that I am a Sikh woman and I am not afraid of anyone,” she said.

Kaur will participate in the BJP conclave virtually.

Her testimony also helped establish, according to the account, alleged collusion by Delhi Police in the killings.
