Nikki Haley wins her first primary victory by defeating Trump in Washington DC

Washington: Nikki Haley won her first victory during the 2024 election campaign by defeating former President Donald Trump in the Washington DC (District of Columbia) primary election as part of the process of selecting the Republican candidate for the presidential election in the US. Haley’s victory today has temporarily halted Trump’s winning streak, but the former president is expected to get the support of a large number of delegates (party members representing voters) on this week’s Super Tuesday.

Super Tuesday is the day of the primary election process to select us presidential candidates, when most states have primary and caucus elections. Despite losing in her home state of South Carolina last week, Haley said she would not give up her candidacy. Haley, 51, received 1,274 votes (62.9 per cent), while her main rival and former President Trump received 676 votes (33.2 per cent).
