Toronto: The Jathedar of Sri Akal Takht Sahib has taken serious note of an alleged violation of Sikh maryada after sacred saroops of Sri Guru Granth Sahib were reportedly transported in a car boot in Canada.
According to a statement issued by the Akal Takht secretariat, some Sikhs from Toronto recently reached Sri Guru Singh Sabha Gurdwara Association in Surrey, British Columbia, to receive sacred saroops of Sri Guru Granth Sahib.
The statement said the gurdwara management allegedly allowed the saroops to be taken away without checking whether the vehicles being used met the required maryada and respect for Guru Sahib. After members of the local sangat objected, the saroops were reportedly brought back and reinstalled at the gurdwara.
The incident led to resentment among members of the Sikh community. The gurdwara management has since issued an explanation on social media and apologised to the sangat.
However, acting on the directions of Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargaj, the Sri Guru Singh Sabha Gurdwara Association BC, Canada, has been asked to submit a written explanation regarding the alleged negligence within 15 days.
Details of sacred saroops sought
The order has also sought complete details of the sacred saroops of Sri Guru Granth Sahib that were sent to the BC-based association through the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) in the past.
The gurdwara management has been asked to provide details of how many saroops it received, how many were provided to the sangat, how many are currently kept at the gurdwara and how many additional saroops are being sought by members of the sangat.
