Chandigarh: The Akali Dal Waris Punjab De on Monday announced its first candidate for the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections, naming Satwant Singh, son of Kehar Singh who was executed in connection with the assassination of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, from the Bassi Pathana constituency.
The announcement was made by Tarsem Singh, acting president of Akali Dal Waris Punjab De and father of Amritsar MP Amritpal Singh. MP Sarbjit Singh Khalsa was also present on the occasion.
Party leaders said the decision was aimed at recognising and honouring families associated with sacrifices made for the Sikh community and the Panth.
Speaking at the announcement, Tarsem Singh said the party’s politics was not limited to seeking political power but was focused on Panthic principles, Punjab’s rights and ensuring due respect and representation for families associated with such sacrifices.
He said choosing Satwant Singh as the party’s first candidate was also intended to counter the perception that such families were being pushed to the margins.
“Respect for the families of martyrs cannot remain limited to statements. They must also be given an appropriate place in the organisational responsibilities of the party,” Tarsem Singh said.
The announcement comes as political parties begin preparations for the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections, with Panthic politics expected to remain an important factor in several constituencies.
