Bathinda: A woman and her alleged boyfriend have been arrested for allegedly strangling her husband in Bathinda and staging the death as a suicide, police said.
The deceased has been identified as 30-year-old Rajpal Singh, a resident of Kotli Khurd village under Maur police station in Bathinda district. The accused have been identified as his wife, Kiranpal Kaur, and her alleged boyfriend, Prabhjit Singh.
According to a complaint filed by Rajpal’s brother Satpal Singh, the incident took place during the night of September 29-30. On the morning of September 30, Kiranpal allegedly raised an alarm and told family members that Rajpal had hanged himself.
Family members and neighbours gathered at the house and found Rajpal hanging from a beam in the kitchen with a parna and rope. However, when they brought the body down, they allegedly noticed injury marks on his body and signs suggesting a struggle. Suspecting that it was not a suicide, the family informed the police.
Police sent the body for post-mortem examination. In his complaint, Satpal expressed suspicion about Kiranpal’s involvement, stating that she had been with Rajpal throughout the night.
Police subsequently questioned Kiranpal. According to the complaint and police account, she initially denied any involvement but later allegedly confessed to killing her husband during questioning.
Police said the investigation indicated that Kiranpal and Prabhjit allegedly strangled Rajpal and then attempted to make the death appear to be suicide by hanging the body.
The accused were produced before a court on Thursday, October 1, and were remanded in police custody for four days. Police have also recovered and seized the parna and rope allegedly used in the crime.
The investigation is continuing, with police questioning both accused to establish the sequence of events and other details of the case.
