Canada PM Mark Carney says talks with Trump on future trade ties were positive

Ottawa: Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on Sunday said he had a positive conversation with US President Donald Trump on the future of trade relations between the two countries, which are currently facing tensions over tariffs and trade disputes.

In a post on social media platform X, Carney said the discussion built on recent constructive talks between the two sides on a framework for a potential trade agreement.

He said the proposed agreement was aimed at delivering economic benefits to both countries, creating new employment opportunities and making goods and services more affordable for people.

Carney also stressed that any future arrangement would respect Canada’s languages, culture and sovereignty.

The conversation comes amid strained economic ties between the neighbouring countries as they remain engaged in a trade dispute. Both sides have been discussing ways to establish a framework for future trade cooperation.
