New Delhi: Three major AI platforms — OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Anthropic’s Claude and Elon Musk’s Grok — reportedly experienced technical problems simultaneously on Thursday evening, leaving users unable to log in or access several services.
Users reported difficulties receiving responses and loading previous conversations. According to reports, the three platforms together receive around 21.2 crore users globally each day.
Users began reporting the disruptions on Downdetector, a platform that tracks service outages based on user reports.
ChatGPT users face issues with search, image generation
According to Downdetector data cited in the report, ChatGPT’s outage peaked in India at around 8.23 pm, when 3,410 complaints were recorded. In the US, more than 36,000 reports were registered around 8.41 pm.
OpenAI said ChatGPT and Codex were experiencing errors. Among affected users, around 81% reported problems with the chat service, 8% with login and 6% with website access.
Users also faced difficulties with features including file uploads, voice mode, search, Deep Research and image generation.
The disruption came as OpenAI was reportedly teasing its upcoming AI model, Astra. The company said it had begun work to resolve the issue and was monitoring recovery.
Claude services also affected
Anthropic’s Claude chatbot, Claude Code and API services were also reportedly disrupted from around 7.30 pm IST.
Downdetector recorded more than 37,000 complaints in the US and over 7,500 in India, according to the report. Among affected users, 50% reported problems with Claude Code, 24% with Claude Chat and 19% with the app.
Anthropic’s technical team said on X that an infrastructure issue had caused partial disruption. The company said engineers were working to resolve the problem, although no precise timeline for a complete restoration was given.
Grok shows ‘model overloaded’ error
Elon Musk’s Grok AI platform also faced an outage, affecting both its app and web versions. Users attempting to interact with the AI through X reportedly received a “model overloaded” error message.
Downdetector recorded more than 1,200 reports in the US and over 84 in India. Around 50% of affected users reported problems with the app, 18% with AI generation and 8% with website access.
The xAI team was working to restore the service, according to the report.
