New Delhi: Chief Justice of India Surya Kant on Saturday welcomed the National Green Tribunal’s initiative to organise an international conference on environmental and climate-related issues, saying such platforms encourage experts from different jurisdictions to exchange ideas and share best practices.
Speaking on the sidelines of the conference on “The Future of Environment and Climate Dynamics”, Justice Surya Kant said environmental challenges extend beyond geographical boundaries and require coordinated global discussions.
He said the NGT’s initiative provides a platform for stakeholders, scientists, domain experts and judicial representatives to discuss how environmental issues are being addressed across different jurisdictions.
“Environmental issues do not have geographical limitations,” the CJI said, stressing the importance of regular interaction among those working on environmental protection and climate-related challenges.
Addressing the conference, Justice Surya Kant also highlighted the importance of environmental protection in India’s cultural traditions and constitutional framework. Referring to Articles 48A and 51A(g) of the Constitution, he said the framework places responsibilities on both the state and citizens to protect the environment.
The NGT conference brought together judges, judicial members, policymakers, scientists, environmental experts, lawyers and delegates from several countries to deliberate on climate change, environmental law, governance and environmental justice.
