New Delhi: The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) secured three of the four major posts in the Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) elections, while an independent candidate won the vice-president’s post.
According to the official results, ABVP’s Yash Dabas was elected president with 24,576 votes. Riya Chhawdi won the secretary’s post with 21,650 votes, while Lakshya Raj Singh secured the joint secretary position with 16,615 votes.
The vice-president’s post went to independent candidate Deepanshu Shokeen, who polled 30,615 votes. His victory marks the first time in 17 years that an independent candidate has won a seat on the DUSU central panel.
The announcement of the results was followed by celebrations on the university campus, with supporters and students dancing to drumbeats and raising slogans in support of the winning candidates.
Counting had begun around 90 minutes later than scheduled. The presidential contest saw a close fight between ABVP and the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI). Congress leader Kanhaiya Kumar had also campaigned extensively for NSUI during the election.
The Left-backed alliance and the student wing of the Aam Aadmi Party also contested the elections but failed to secure any of the four key positions.
Polling for the DUSU elections was held on Friday across 52 colleges. The overall voter turnout was 40.46%, with 61,312 of the 1,51,519 eligible students casting their votes.
