Amritsar: More than 24 hours after the high-profile killing of Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Harjit Singh, police are yet to find a concrete lead in the case. Several police teams are examining CCTV footage from the area to identify and trace the suspects.
According to the preliminary investigation, two Sikh men allegedly involved in the incident were seen fleeing on a scooter from Bhagtanwala grain market at around 12.32am. There is speculation that the suspects may have escaped towards Tarn Taran, although police officials have not disclosed details about the investigation.
Punjab Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav, who reached Amritsar on Friday, said special teams had been constituted to investigate the killing. He said efforts were underway to identify and arrest those responsible at the earliest.
According to the DGP, ASI Harjit Singh was shot from close range in the back of his neck and died at the spot. A .30-bore cartridge case was recovered from the crime scene.
Harjit Singh, posted at Gate Hakima police station, was on duty at the grain market during the intervening night of Thursday and Friday when he was attacked.
