New Delhi: Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) leaders Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka were granted bail by a Delhi special court on Wednesday, seven days after they were detained during a protest at Jantar Mantar. They were released on a bail bond of ₹50,000 each, according to the report.
The two leaders were detained by Delhi Police on October 13 after arriving at Jantar Mantar with the national flag and around eight to 10 CJP supporters, despite a government order issued on October 12 prohibiting protests at the site.
They were sent to jail for five days on allegations of violating restrictions on public demonstrations. On October 19, their detention was extended by another two days.
Earlier on Wednesday, the Delhi High Court declined to intervene in the matter, asking the leaders to first pursue the legal remedy available against the magistrate’s order.
The High Court questioned why the petitioners had approached it directly under Article 226 of the Constitution when they could challenge the magistrate’s order through a revision petition.
Following the court’s observations, Das and Ranka withdrew their petitions, with the option of pursuing the alternative legal remedy.
