Punjab Assembly session begins with tributes to Jhotta, eight MGNREGA workers

Chandigarh: The session of the Punjab Legislative Assembly began on Thursday with members paying tribute to several prominent personalities and others who died recently, including anti-drug activist Parvinder Singh Jhotta and eight MGNREGA workers killed in a road accident in Sangrur.

Tributes were also paid to former minister Chunni Lal Bhagat, former MP Varinder Singh Bajwa, former MLA Ranjit Singh, renowned doctor Ratan Lal Mittal and Vidya Devi, mother of MLA Manjit Singh Bilaspur.

The session is taking place amid heightened political tensions in Punjab over drug trafficking and law and order. Disagreements between the Centre and the state government over these issues have also intensified.

Meanwhile, people in Mansa continue to demand justice in the murder case of Jhotta, an anti-drug activist whose killing has triggered protests and calls for a thorough investigation.
