New Delhi: The Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) has warned the Centre and state governments that it will resume its nationwide agitation against the alleged examination paper leak if arrested students and protesters are not released immediately and criminal cases against them are not withdrawn.
Addressing a press conference in Delhi, CJP national spokesperson Ashutosh Ranka alleged that students and protesters were being arrested in several states, including Assam, Bihar and West Bengal, despite assurances given during talks with the Centre.
Ranka said that during the third round of discussions with Union Ministers J.P. Nadda and Jitendra Singh, held before the organisation ended its 36-day protest at Jantar Mantar, the government had agreed that all FIRs registered against protesters and CJP organisers would be withdrawn and that no fresh cases would be filed.
He said the CJP had submitted a draft agreement to the ministers and that the government had agreed to share a written document after legal consultations by Tuesday.
According to Ranka, the organisation suspended its nationwide protest only after receiving assurances that no punitive action would be taken against demonstrators. However, he alleged that continued arrests and the registration of new cases by state governments amounted to a breach of that understanding.
The CJP demanded that the government honour its commitment by issuing a written agreement and ensuring the release of all detained protesters by Tuesday. Failing this, the organisation said it would launch a fresh phase of protests across the country.
CJP chief spokesperson Sourav Das said the organisation had called off its agitation in good faith after the government assured it that action would be taken on its key demands, and expressed hope that the commitment would now be fulfilled.
