Chandigarh: Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has launched a sharp political attack on the BJP over its planned ‘Nasha Mukt Punjab Yatra’, alleging that those responsible for supplying drugs to Punjab were now organising a campaign against the drug menace.
Speaking to reporters in Chandigarh, Mann said Punjab shares a 533-km international border, through which weapons and narcotics are allegedly smuggled into the state. He said the Punjab Police regularly intercepts such consignments.
Mann also referred to drug seizures at Mundra Port in Gujarat, alleging that consignments weighing 2,000-3,000 kg had been intercepted there. He said Punjab Police had also recovered large quantities of narcotics based on intelligence inputs in Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Gujarat.
The Chief Minister accused the Centre of attempting to portray Punjab negatively over the drug issue and questioned the BJP’s decision to hold an anti-drug yatra in the state.
“You keep supplying drugs and also take out a Nasha Mukt Punjab Yatra,” Mann said, adding that the people of Punjab were aware of the situation and would not be misled by the BJP.
He further claimed that 60% of the narcotics seized in drug-trafficking cases across the country had been recovered by the Punjab Police.
Mann highlights action against gangsters
Mann said the Punjab Police was simultaneously taking strong action against drug trafficking and organised crime to restore law and order in the state.
He said action was being taken not only against gangsters operating from Punjab but also against those allegedly running criminal activities from abroad and attempting to disturb the state’s peace.
The Chief Minister said Punjab Police was working to bring such alleged foreign-based gangsters back to the state and asserted that no anti-social element would be spared.
