New Delhi: Delhi Police on Friday visited the residence of Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) founder Abhijeet Deepke and prevented him from leaving home ahead of a planned ‘Lehra Do Tiranga’ event at Central Park in Connaught Place, scheduled for 5 pm.
The party had called on supporters to gather at the park carrying the national flag. Police personnel served Deepke with legal notices and documents and sought a written declaration from him.
Questioning the action, Deepke asked whether the police were trying to stop him from carrying the Tricolour. He said the notices referred to his alleged plan to visit Jantar Mantar.
Deepke claimed that seven to eight police personnel arrived at his residence and accused him of engaging in “illegal activities” and inciting people by carrying the national flag.
“Are we being stopped from carrying the Tricolour in our own country?” he asked, criticising the action. He initially refused to sign the police documents but later signed them after adding his comments, following a request from the officers.
The police action came hours after Deepke sought to distance his campaign from calls for “regime change”. At a press conference on Thursday night, he said the campaign was not aimed at changing the government but at seeking the removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
Deepke said the group was pursuing its demands through Gandhian methods and wanted Kumar to be replaced by an impartial election commissioner, alleging irregularities in the electoral process.
The circumstances surrounding the police notice and the proposed event remain central to the dispute.
