Amritsar: An Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) of the Punjab Police allegedly drove a police PCR vehicle onto railway tracks while under the influence of alcohol, triggering embarrassment for the force and raising serious safety concerns.
The incident took place near the Bhagtanwala railway crossing, where the PCR vehicle got stuck on the tracks. A video of the incident, recorded by local residents, has since gone viral on social media.
The accused has been identified as ASI Balwinder Singh. Eyewitnesses alleged that the officer appeared heavily intoxicated and lost control of the government vehicle, which ended up on the railway tracks.
According to people present at the scene, when questioned about the incident, the ASI allegedly said, “I had only a little to drink. I don’t know how the vehicle ended up here.”
After receiving information about the incident, a police team from Anngarh police station reached the spot, took the ASI into custody and later removed the PCR vehicle from the railway tracks.
Local residents said the incident could have resulted in a major tragedy had a train arrived while the vehicle was stranded on the tracks. Police are expected to initiate further action after examining the circumstances surrounding the incident.
