Chandigarh: A Punjab Police Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) has been named in an investigation into an alleged conspiracy to falsely implicate a Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL) junior engineer in a narcotics case, triggering fresh scrutiny of the police’s handling of the incident.
The development came after accused persons in the case reportedly made statements before a court naming the DSP of Jalalabad subdivision. Acting on the court’s directions, Arniwala Mandi Police have now added the officer as an accused in the FIR. The move has sparked widespread discussion in the region and raised serious questions over the conduct of the investigation.
According to the complaint filed by Amit Kumar, a junior engineer with PSPCL and a resident of Mandi Roranwali, the incident occurred on June 3 while he was travelling to his workplace in Arniwala. He told police that he had stopped near the Gang Canal bridge to fill water in a cooler kept inside his car when three unidentified men arrived in a Swift car, identified themselves as police personnel and began questioning him.
The complainant alleged that the men searched his vehicle and claimed to have recovered a packet from beneath the car seat. Amit Kumar maintained that he had no knowledge of the packet or its contents.
As local residents gathered at the spot, the DSP of Jalalabad and other police personnel reached the scene. Owing to the growing crowd and the suspicious circumstances, the junior engineer and the recovered packet were taken to the CIA Staff office in Fazilka for further verification.
Police officials later opened and examined the packet at the CIA office. According to the complaint, no narcotic substance was found inside, following which Amit Kumar was released without any action.
The investigation into the alleged conspiracy is continuing, while the inclusion of the DSP as an accused marks a significant development in the case.
