Former Akali minister Maluka’s remark on women’s dignity sparks row in Punjab

Bathinda: Former Punjab minister and Shiromani Akali Dal leader Sikandar Singh Maluka has triggered a controversy over his remarks on the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government’s monthly financial assistance scheme for women.

Responding to a journalist’s question in Rampura Phul, Maluka reportedly said that the government intended to “violate women’s dignity by giving them ₹1,000 each”. His remarks drew criticism from the ruling AAP, which said they reflected his attitude towards women.

The Punjab State Commission for Women has also taken cognisance of the statement. Commission chairperson Raj Lali Gill wrote to Punjab Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav, directing him to initiate action in the matter.

The commission has called for an inquiry by an officer of the rank of Superintendent of Police (SP) and directed that the report be submitted by October 23. Maluka has also been summoned by the commission.

What Maluka said

Maluka made the remarks while attending a programme organised for women in Rampura Phul a few days ago. During the event, a journalist questioned him about the AAP government’s Mawan Dhiyan Satkar Yojana, under which the government has announced monthly financial assistance of ₹1,000 to ₹1,500 for women.

Responding to the question, Maluka made the controversial remark about the government giving women ₹1,000 each and violating their dignity, triggering a political row.
