Chandigarh: The Punjab State Human Rights Commission (PSHRC) has taken notice of alleged harassment and security concerns linked to the ‘Gedi Route’ outside MCM DAV College in Sector 36-A, Chandigarh.
The commission’s bench took up a complaint filed by Sector 36-A resident Kulbir Singh Rana, who alleged traffic disruption, reckless and slow driving by unidentified male drivers and groups of students gathering outside the college.
The complaint also alleged incidents of fights, harassment, inappropriate comments and unauthorised recording of female students. It further stated that the disturbance continues late into the night, causing inconvenience and concern among local residents.
Fight outside college also mentioned
The complainant referred to a fight between two groups outside the college gate on August 6, 2026, following which the Police Control Room (PCR) was called at around 2:35 pm.
Taking the matter seriously, the commission has directed that the complaint be forwarded to the SSP, Chandigarh, who has been asked to submit a detailed report one week before the next date of hearing.
The complainant has sought regular police presence in the area, a police beat near the Verka booth and appropriate traffic-checking points to regulate vehicles and prevent harassment, noise and disturbances.
The commission stressed that public spaces around educational institutions must remain safe and orderly, particularly for students and women. It also emphasised the need for preventive measures to ensure that traffic congestion, harassment or unlawful activities do not become a continuing source of fear and inconvenience for students and residents.
