Mohali: A 25-year-old man allegedly attacked his sister’s boyfriend’s family with a knife in Kurali after opposing their proposed love marriage, killing the young man’s mother and seriously injuring his father.
The incident took place around 12:30 pm on August 28 on Badali Road in Ward 13, Kurali. Police said the accused, identified as Sonu Kumar, entered the house carrying a knife and allegedly attacked 45-year-old Saroj Devi multiple times. She died at the spot.
Her husband, Om Nath Rai, was also injured in the abdomen when he tried to intervene and save his wife. He was rushed to Civil Hospital, Phase 6, Mohali, where he is undergoing treatment.
Sister’s love marriage believed to be the reason
According to the police investigation, Sonu’s sister had been in a relationship with Bittu, Om Nath’s son, for around one-and-a-half years. The couple had also allegedly eloped about one-and-a-half months ago.
Police said both families were reportedly willing to accept the marriage, but Sonu was opposed to the relationship.
Investigators said Sonu allegedly learnt on August 28 that his sister was preparing to marry Bittu. He then bought a sharp-edged knife from the market and went to Bittu’s house, where he allegedly attacked his parents.
Based on Om Nath’s statement, a case was registered at City Kurali police station under Sections 103 (murder) and 109 (attempt to murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
Accused arrested within 4-5 hours
Following the killing, a special police team was formed under the supervision of SP (Rural) Jaspinder Singh and the direction of DSP Kharar-2 (Mullanpur) Harkirat Singh. The team was led by City Kurali SHO Inspector Harsh Mohan Gautam.
Using technical inputs and intelligence, police tracked down Sonu Kumar within four to five hours of the incident while he was allegedly attempting to flee.
The accused was produced before a court on Saturday and was sent to one-day police remand for further questioning and recovery of the weapon allegedly used in the crime.
