Amritsar: Amritsar Police on Thursday arrested a man for allegedly committing sacrilege inside the Sri Harmandir Sahib complex after he allegedly tore pages, referred to as angs, from a Gutka Sahib and tied them to the suit of a woman devotee.
According to police, the woman noticed the torn pages and immediately informed the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC). After examining CCTV footage from the complex, police identified the accused as Mandeep Singh, a resident of the Shaheed Udham Singh Nagar area.
Assistant Commissioner of Police Surinder Singh confirmed the incident and said a complaint was lodged with the Kotwali police by Simranjit Singh, an SGPC employee deployed in the parikrama area.
Police said Mandeep Singh was subsequently identified as an accused and arrested. Further investigation is underway to determine the motive behind the alleged act.
According to the police, the woman and her family, who are from Shaheed Udham Singh Nagar, had visited the Golden Temple to pay obeisance on Thursday morning. After offering prayers at Sri Akal Takht Sahib, the family was sitting in the complex when the accused allegedly tied the torn angs of the Gutka Sahib to the woman’s suit.
