New Delhi: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu spoke by phone with Flydubai pilot Captain Sumit Machhar and praised his bravery during an incident involving an attack inside the aircraft’s cockpit.
Netanyahu described Captain Machhar as a “true hero” and praised his efforts to protect the lives of passengers despite being seriously injured during the incident. Israel has also invited the Indian pilot to visit the country.
The Israeli Embassy in Mumbai described Machhar as a “new hero” and said Israel was looking forward to welcoming him. The Israeli government is also reportedly preparing to honour him.
Flydubai flight FZ1073 was travelling from Dubai to Tel Aviv with 174 passengers on board when the co-pilot allegedly attacked Captain Machhar inside the cockpit. Machhar was seriously injured and the aircraft began rapidly losing altitude.
Despite his injuries, Machhar managed to open the cockpit door, allowing passengers and crew members to enter and restrain the attacker. The aircraft was subsequently landed safely at an airport in Saudi Arabia.
Israeli officials have also praised Machhar, saying he played an important role in helping save the lives of those on board while putting his own life at risk. Netanyahu thanked him for his courage and saluted his efforts.
Captain Machhar is currently undergoing treatment at a hospital in Abu Dhabi. According to the Indian Embassy, his condition is improving and he is receiving the best available medical care.
