Pet dog helps crack Mohali murder case as court awards life sentence to accused

Mohali: A Mohali court has sentenced a man to life imprisonment in a 2021 murder case after a pet dog played a crucial role in helping investigators recover the victim’s body and crack the crime.

The case dates back to June 12, 2021, when Sucha Singh, a goat rearer from Chhoti Badi Nangal, went out to graze his goats but never returned home. According to the prosecution, village resident Jagir Singh alias Ghola owed Sucha Singh ₹40,000 for goats he had purchased.

As the family searched for the missing man, his pet dog Rocky repeatedly led them towards a field and kept barking at the same spot, raising their suspicions. The family informed the police, who excavated the area and recovered Sucha Singh’s body. Police said the victim’s head had been severed from the body.

Investigators later recovered the victim’s head from another location and registered a murder case against Jagir Singh. The recovery of the body, prompted by the dog’s repeated attempts to draw attention to the site, became a key breakthrough in the investigation.

Following a lengthy trial, a Mohali court convicted Jagir Singh and sentenced him to life imprisonment. The court also imposed a fine of ₹1 lakh on the convict.

The case drew attention for the role played by Rocky, whose actions helped investigators locate the victim’s body and ultimately aided the police investigation.
