Phagwara: Punjab DGP Gaurav Yadav visited Lovely Professional University (LPU) on Monday to take stock of the situation on the ground amid days of tension and violent protests on the campus, following directions from Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann.
During his visit, Yadav met police and administrative officials to gather information about the situation and the ongoing investigation.
The DGP said some “miscreants” had attempted to disturb the situation and warned that strict action would be taken against anyone taking the law into their own hands. He said no one would be allowed to violate the law and that action would be taken according to the law if anyone’s role emerged during the investigation.
Yadav said students had been agitated following the protest at Jantar Mantar and that police had attempted to resolve the matter by holding discussions with students. He said a special investigation team (SIT) had been constituted to conduct a detailed probe into all aspects of the matter, including the FIR registered by the police.
The DGP said that no person, regardless of how influential they might be, would be spared if found guilty during the investigation.
He also appealed to students and the public not to believe unclear reports and rumours circulating on social media and urged them to verify information before sharing it.
The protests at LPU began following claims regarding an alleged incident involving a female student and later turned violent. The university administration has described the claims as rumours and urged students and parents to rely only on official information.
