New Delhi: Delhi minister Parvesh Verma allegedly slapped a youth during a road-related protest in Tilak Nagar on Sunday, with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) sharing a video of the incident on X.
The episode began after AAP MLA Jarnail Singh protested over a newly constructed road in Tilak Nagar. During an inspection, Singh reportedly pulled up a portion of the road with his hands and handed it to Verma, who holds the Public Works Department (PWD) portfolio.
As Verma was leaving the spot, protesters followed him and questioned him. During the exchange, Verma allegedly slapped a youth who was recording the incident on video.
The youth alleged that he was assaulted in front of police personnel and threatened with death. He subsequently submitted a complaint to the police, demanding a written apology from the minister.
Following the controversy, Verma also released a video, alleging that Jarnail Singh and his supporters were creating a controversy over a road that had been constructed the previous night. He further alleged that Singh had sought a commission and created the issue after not receiving it.
Verma said, “Jarnail’s supporters abused my family. In such circumstances, I did what any ordinary person would have done.”
The incident triggered a political confrontation, with the AAP demanding Verma’s resignation and staging a protest. AAP MLA Kuldeep Kumar was reportedly detained by police during the demonstration.
