Chandigarh: People in Punjab will no longer have to deal with many difficult Urdu and Persian legal terms while registering land and other property. The Punjab Revenue and Rehabilitation Department has recommended replacing 35 complex words with simpler Punjabi alternatives to make property registration easier for the general public.
The department has written to the Inspector General of Registration and all Deputy Commissioners in Punjab, sharing a list of the old terms and their recommended replacements. Officials have been asked to give preference to the new, simpler words in registration documents.
Earlier, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann directed the Revenue Department to replace complicated legal terminology with language that ordinary people can easily understand. Following this, the department formed a committee to review the terminology used in property registration.
The committee recommended replacing 35 difficult words—many of which were of Urdu and Persian origin and had been in use for centuries—with simpler Punjabi terms. The aim is to make property registration documents more accessible, transparent, and easier for the public to understand.
