Punjab youth dies by suicide after alleged ₹18 lakh New Zealand visa fraud

Hoshiarpur: A youth from Hardo-Patti village near Garhdiwala in Punjab’s Hoshiarpur district allegedly died by suicide after being cheated of ₹18 lakh on the promise of being sent to New Zealand, police said.

The deceased has been identified as Gurveer Singh, son of Trilok Singh. Police have registered a case against the accused travel agent based on the complaint lodged by the victim’s father.

According to the complaint, Jatinder Singh Bariyana, son of Gurdeep Singh Bariyana and a resident of Hardo-Patti village, allegedly promised to arrange Gurveer Singh’s migration to New Zealand. The accused allegedly took ₹18 lakh from the family but neither facilitated the overseas travel nor returned the money.

The complainant alleged that the financial loss and prolonged mental distress caused by the alleged fraud drove his son to take the extreme step.

Police officials said an FIR has been registered against the accused under relevant sections of the law. The accused is currently absconding, and police teams are conducting raids at suspected locations to trace and arrest him.

The investigation into the case is ongoing.
