New Delhi: Amid the ongoing controversy over Rajya Sabha MP Raghav Chadha’s voter registration, Vice-President and Rajya Sabha Chairman C.P. Radhakrishnan has nominated the Punjab MP to the Rajya Sabha General Purposes Committee.
Chadha has been included in the committee alongside Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge and other senior MPs, including M. Thambidurai of the AIADMK, Mukul Wasnik and Ranjeet Ranjan of the Congress, Tiruchi Siva of the DMK and K. Laxman of the BJP.
The General Purposes Committee plays an advisory role in the functioning of the Rajya Sabha and considers matters that do not fall within the jurisdiction of any other committee. The Rajya Sabha chairman heads the committee, which also includes the deputy chairman, a panel of vice-chairpersons, chairpersons of departmental standing committees and leaders of recognised parties and groups in the House.
In a separate development, Chadha has also been selected to represent the Indian Parliament at the 12th Inter-Parliamentary Union Global Conference of Young Parliamentarians, scheduled to be held in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, from September 4 to 6.
Chadha thanked Vice-President Radhakrishnan for the nomination.
