Fagguwala: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday renewed his challenge to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for an open debate over the latter’s alleged charge that the Congress is “anti-national”, claiming he could prove within five minutes that it was the PM who deserved the label.
“Come anywhere, sit with me and debate. I will prove within five minutes that Modi is anti-national,” Gandhi said.
Addressing a Congress ‘Insaf rally’ in Fagguwala to launch the party’s campaign for the upcoming Punjab assembly elections, Gandhi also took a dig at the BJP’s willingness to convene a special session of Parliament to discuss the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
“They say discuss it in Parliament, but you switch off my microphone. You don’t allow me to speak,” he said.
On Tuesday, Union home minister Amit Shah had said the government was ready to convene a special session of Parliament to discuss the SIR exercise and challenged the Opposition to participate in the debate.
Accusing Modi of working in the interests of billionaires, Gandhi alleged that the government was handing over the country’s land, infrastructure and airports to industrialist Gautam Adani.
“They will not work for farmers or small and medium businesses. The Congress will,” he said.
