New Delhi: Congress leader and MP Amrinder Singh Raja Warring on Friday formally resigned as Punjab Congress president after meeting senior party leader Rahul Gandhi in Delhi.
Warring had declared himself the “former president” on Thursday, but completed the formal resignation process on Friday by submitting his resignation to Gandhi.
Warring clarified that he had resigned voluntarily and that the resignation had not been forced on him.
After the meeting, Warring said he had formally handed over his resignation to Rahul Gandhi, who had played a role in his appointment as Punjab Congress president around four-and-a-half years ago.
During the meeting, Warring said he discussed his experience during his tenure as state party chief, along with the current situation and challenges facing Punjab. He added that he would remain available whenever the Congress needed his services.
Warring said no person could remain at the top forever and that everyone eventually had to become a former office-holder.
The Congress high command had verbally informed Warring about the proposed leadership change earlier, and the formal process was completed with the submission of his resignation on Friday.
The party is expected to announce his successor shortly.
