New Delhi: India continued its impressive run at the Commonwealth Games on Friday as boxer Sakshi Chaudhary clinched the country’s ninth gold medal by winning the women’s 51kg category.
Sakshi defeated England’s Ruby White by a unanimous 5-0 verdict in the final to secure the gold medal. With her victory, India’s medal tally rose to 32, including nine gold medals.
India’s boxing campaign is set to continue, with six more Indian boxers scheduled to compete in gold medal bouts.
Earlier in the day, India had won its eighth gold medal after women boxers Jasmin Lamboria and Preeti Pawar emerged victorious in their respective finals. Jasmin claimed the gold in the 57kg category by defeating Northern Ireland’s Michaela Walsh, while Preeti won the 54kg title after overcoming Canada’s Savannah Dolmage.
India also celebrated another gold as Soman Rana topped the podium in the para shot put event.
Meanwhile, India’s Jadumani Singh settled for the silver medal after losing the men’s 55kg boxing final to Australia’s Jai Dixon.
With the latest successes, India has climbed to sixth place in the Commonwealth Games medal standings.
