Ludhiana: The nine-day strike by sanitation workers in Ludhiana, launched over the police lathi-charge on sanitation workers in Barnala and the demand to regularise contractual employees, ended on Saturday after an assurance from Punjab Local Government Minister Harjot Singh Bains.
The minister reached Ludhiana and held a special meeting with leaders of the protesting unions. Following the meeting and the minister’s assurance, the organisations announced that they were withdrawing the strike, bringing relief to city residents.
The strike had severely affected sanitation services, with garbage remaining uncollected across the city for the past nine days, leading to heaps of waste piling up in several areas.
During the meeting, Harjot Singh Bains assured the protesters that the Punjab government would work towards a permanent solution to the demands of contractual employees during the upcoming Assembly session.
He said the government would either regularise their services or enhance their salaries.
