Chandigarh: A late-night meeting in Delhi involving Punjab Congress president Amarinder Singh Raja Warring, former Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi, and MP Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa has triggered fresh speculation over the party’s leadership in Punjab.
According to party sources, the meeting, reportedly held at Randhawa’s Delhi residence on Wednesday night, was facilitated by the owner of a media agency that has previously worked with Congress leaders.
While none of the leaders has commented publicly on the meeting, sources claimed the discussion centred on calls for Warring to step down as Punjab Congress chief.
Sources said Channi and Randhawa argued that Warring’s popularity had declined and that it would be in the best interests of both him and the party if he resigned from the post. However, the meeting reportedly ended without any concrete outcome, apart from efforts by the party leadership to bridge differences among senior leaders.
The development comes days after a meeting chaired by AICC General Secretary (Organisation) K.C. Venugopal in Delhi, where, according to sources, Warring had offered to resign on the condition that he would not participate in the party’s election campaign.
Sources also claimed that Channi had indicated he would resign as chairman of the party’s election campaign committee if Warring was not replaced.
A senior Congress leader, speaking on condition of anonymity, said more behind-the-scenes discussions could take place in the coming days as several dissatisfied leaders remain in Delhi.
The Congress has not issued any official statement on the reported meeting or the claims regarding possible resignations.
