New Delhi: Captain Shreyas Iyer’s unbeaten century helped India defeat the West Indies by eight wickets in the first T20 International of the five-match series on Tuesday.
Chasing 172, India reached the target in just 14.4 overs, losing two wickets in the process. Iyer produced a blistering 102 not out off 43 balls, striking boundaries around the ground to put India firmly in control.
Ishan Kishan provided valuable support with an unbeaten 37. The pair added runs rapidly for the third wicket to take India comfortably across the finish line.
Earlier, West Indies posted 171 in 19.1 overs after being put in to bat. Shai Hope and Sherfane Rutherford led the scoring with half-centuries, making 52 and 56 respectively.
West Indies made a positive start, with Hope and Rutherford helping the visitors build a strong platform. However, India’s bowlers fought back during the middle overs, taking four quick wickets and slowing the West Indies’ scoring rate.
India’s successful chase gave them a 1-0 lead in the five-match T20I series.
