Two Punjab youths sentenced to death in Saudi Arabia over Pakistani national’s death

Chandigarh: Two young men from Punjab have reportedly been sentenced to death by a Saudi Arabian court in connection with the death of a Pakistani national during a fight last year.

Gurdeep Singh, from Barsalpur village, and Sukhchain Singh, from Manki village in Khannaon, were arrested by Saudi police after the Pakistani man died during an altercation involving the two men in May last year.

After lengthy legal proceedings, a Saudi court reportedly sentenced both men to death on September 29. The families have been informed that the court order is to be carried out within 30 days.

The verdict has left the families deeply distressed. They have appealed to the Centre and the Punjab government to intervene and arrange legal assistance for the two men through the Indian Embassy in Saudi Arabia. The families have also sought relief from the death sentence.

The families have urged the Indian authorities to provide all possible legal and diplomatic assistance to ensure that the two men are given an opportunity to challenge or seek relief from the sentence.

In a separate case, Gurpreet Singh, a resident of Hethli Patti village near Nangal, has also reportedly been sentenced to death in Saudi Arabia in connection with an assault case. A mercy petition has been filed in that matter, while the Punjab government has reportedly assured the family of legal assistance.
