New Delhi: WhatsApp, owned by Meta, on Tuesday launched web-based audio and video calling, allowing users to make and receive calls directly through a web browser without downloading the desktop application.
The new feature supports both one-to-one and group calls and includes capabilities such as screen sharing, reactions and call history, bringing the browser experience closer to the mobile and desktop versions of the platform.
WhatsApp has also introduced a call transfer feature, enabling users to seamlessly shift an ongoing group call from their mobile phone to a desktop or laptop without disconnecting.
To improve the security and management of group calls, the platform has rolled out a Waiting Room feature. Under this system, participants joining through a call link must wait in a virtual lobby until they are approved by the host.
The messaging platform has also added QuickHD and Noise Suppression technologies to enhance call quality. These features are designed to provide high-definition video from the start of a call while reducing background noise for clearer audio.
WhatsApp said the new calling features will be rolled out to users in phases.
