Heavy rains wreak havoc in Tamil Nadu, government declares public holiday

Heavy rains in Tamil Nadu have wreaked havoc in several areas including Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi and Tenkasi, inundating paddy fields, roads, residential areas and bridges. Chief Secretary Shiv Dass Meena told reporters today that help has been sought from the Army, Navy and Air Force in view of the rains and floods. 
As many as 84 boats have been deployed for rescue and relief operations and the government has ordered rescue operations at all four places. A public holiday has been declared in the district on December 18.
