Modi surname case: Supreme Court stays Rahul Gandhi’s two-year jail term

New Delhi: In a major relief to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, the Supreme Court on Friday stayed the Gujarat High Court’s two-year jail term for his ‘Modi surname’ remark. The apex court said that no reason has been given by the trial court judge for awarding the maximum sentence and the sentence orders need to be stayed till the final decision.
The implications of the lower court’s orders are widespread. The Supreme Court has said that not only Rahul Gandhi’s right to continue in public life was affected, but also the voters who elected him.
