Supreme Court stays Centre’s notification on fact-checking unit

New Delhi: The Supreme Court has stayed the Centre’s notification on the fact-check unit. The Supreme Court stayed the notification a day after the Centre notified a fact-finding unit under the Press Information Bureau to tackle the challenge of fake news.

The Supreme Court, while quashing the March 20 High Court’s decision not to stay it, said that the Bombay High Court is to hear petitions challenging the new IT Rules, in which the issue of freedom of speech has been mainly raised.

The court said that it doesn’t want to say anything on the merits in this case, the High Court has to decide on this. The Supreme Court said that the rules will remain banned till then.

This decision has been given by the bench of CJI DY Chandrachud, Justice JB Pardiwala and Justice Manoj Mishra.
