Will same-sex marriage be legalised or not?, Supreme court’s verdict today
New Delhi: The Supreme Court will deliver its much-awaited verdict today on a batch of petitions seeking legal recognition of same-sex marriage.
A five-judge bench headed by Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud asserted that only the legal aspect of the Special Marriage Act and the Foreign Marriage Act being looked into is not recognising non-heterosexual marriages.
Today, a five-judge Constitution bench will decide whether same-sex marriage can be legalized or not.
The court reserved the verdict on May 11
The Constitution Bench of the Supreme Court completed the hearing on May 11 and reserved its decision on it. The court had heard the matter for 10 days after which the verdict was reserved. Today, the Supreme Court will give its verdict on 20 petitions.
The constitution bench comprises Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul, Justice S Ravindra Bhat, Justice Hima Kohli and Justice PS Narasimha.
