Now CM to be the chancellor of all Punjab universities, government to table bill in assembly today
Punjab News: The Bhagwant Mann government in Punjab is all set to do away with the governor’s authority to appoint vice-chancellors (VCs) of the state’s universities. On the second day of the assembly session today, the state government is going to bring an amendment bill, through which the Chief Minister will be made chancellor of the state’s universities instead of the Governor.
In this way, the authority to appoint vice-chancellors of universities will also come to the Chancellor i.e. the Chief Minister. Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and Governor Banwarilal Purohit have been at loggerheads for a long time. The decision for this amendment bill has been taken in the cabinet meeting on Monday.
The bill is being brought on the lines of the Bengal government, under which the Mamata Banerjee government passed a resolution in the assembly last year making the chief minister the chancellor of universities instead of the governor. However, the bill passed by the West Bengal government in the House was not approved by the Governor there and when the matter reached the Supreme Court, the Supreme Court rejected this bill.
