Punjab High Court quotes Shakespeare on love, quashes FIR in minor abducting and marriage case
Chandigarh: The Punjab and Haryana High Court on Tuesday heard a petition seeking the quashing of an FIR lodged against a man for allegedly abducting a minor from her home and marrying her.
The High Court observed that it should not refrain from exercising its power to register an FIR in such cases.
At the time of the incident, the girl was a minor. However, she is now an adult, and both the man and the woman are living together.
The judge reproduced a quote from William Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”: “Love looks not with the eyes, but with the mind; And therefore is wing’d Cupid painted blind.” The court also dismissed the FIR.
This case dates back 14 years. In 2009, a boy was accused of abducting a minor girl. A case was registered against him, and he was arrested about eight years later.
He was subsequently granted bail. A petition was then filed on his behalf to quash the FIR registered at that time.
