New Delhi: Delhi Police have claimed that nearly 1,000 of the 2,873 people whose records were examined at and around the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) protest site at Jantar Mantar had previous criminal cases registered against them.
According to police officials, the verification exercise was launched following the violence during the ‘Chalo Parliament’ protest on July 20.
A senior police officer said the analysis of criminal databases and dossier records revealed that 989 individuals had been named in serious criminal cases, including murder, attempt to murder, robbery, rape, kidnapping, offences against women, illegal arms possession and offences under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.
Police said the records showed that 101 people had previously been booked in murder cases, 62 in attempt-to-murder cases, 284 in robbery cases, 229 under the Arms Act, 135 in snatching cases, 19 in kidnapping cases and 67 under the NDPS Act.
The verification also found that 61 individuals had been booked in rape cases, 25 in cases involving offences against women and six under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, police said.
According to Delhi Police, the scrutiny was based on records maintained by various district police units and other law enforcement agencies. Officials said the database check covered 2,873 individuals, of whom 989, or about one-third, were found to have previous criminal records.
The verification exercise followed the July 20 clashes during the CJP protest, in which more than 200 police personnel and over 65 protesters were reported injured, according to police.
