Punjab Assembly begins Monsoon Session, House moves resolution against paper leaks and action on students

Chandigarh: The Monsoon Session of the Punjab Legislative Assembly commenced on Monday with Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan and members of the House paying tributes to several departed personalities.

The Assembly observed condolences in memory of former MLA Sahi Ram Bishnoi, soldier Sarabjit Singh, freedom fighter Sewa Singh, Olympian Randhir Singh, Punjabi singer Bhula Ram, Manjit Singh Dhos—uncle of MLA Davinder Singh Laddi Dhos, Bhupinder Singh Pahra, Army jawan Sikandar Singh and children who lost their lives due to what was described as the Centre government’s “wrong policies.”

Soon after the session began, an important resolution was introduced in the House condemning alleged paper leaks, recruitment scams and police action against students during peaceful protests in states governed by the Centre and the BJP.

Presenting the resolution, Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema said more than 70 major examination scams, paper leak incidents and cases of digital hacking had surfaced across the country over the past decade. He said these incidents had jeopardised the future of lakhs of young aspirants and eroded public confidence in the government examination system.
