Ambala: Two youths were detained by police early Sunday in connection with the alleged assault of Gursimran Singh Mand, president of the International Anti-Khalistan Terrorist Front and a Ludhiana-based leader, at Gurdwara Sri Panjokhra Sahib. They were later released following protests by a large number of devotees.
The two youths were detained on the basis of an FIR registered in connection with the incident, which took place during celebrations marking the Parkash Purab of Guru Harkrishan Sahib.
Sikh devotees protest outside police station
After news of the detentions spread, a large number of Sikh devotees gathered outside Panjokhra Sahib police station, following a call by member Rupinder Singh, and demanded the immediate release of the youths.
Meanwhile, the gurdwara administration submitted a written complaint to the police seeking action against Gursimran Singh Mand and his associates for allegedly disturbing the peace and maryada of the gurdwara.
A 27-year-old devotee, Surinder Singh, who was injured after an alleged collision involving Mand’s speeding vehicle, also recorded his statement with the police.
Following discussions between the devotees and the administration, a one-and-a-half-hour ultimatum was given to the police. The two youths were subsequently released.
What happened at the gurdwara?
According to the information available, on August 7, a vehicle from Gursimran Singh Mand’s convoy was passing through the gathering of devotees when it allegedly struck people in the congregation. Some devotees were injured and accused the driver of negligent driving.
The incident led to a confrontation, during which people present at the spot allegedly assaulted Mand. The situation remained tense for some time before being brought under control.
