New Delhi: A five-storey building collapsed in Delhi’s Satya Niketan area on Sunday, killing five people and critically injuring five others. Twelve people have been rescued so far, according to the information provided.
The building was reportedly 40-50 years old and housed a hostel. Among those killed were a student and a labourer, while the identities of three others were yet to be established.
According to sources, water had accumulated in the basement, while eyewitnesses said excavation work was also underway there when the building collapsed. Students were reportedly inside their rooms at the time of the incident.
The building owner has been identified as Anand Bansal, who lives in Gurugram. Police have registered an FIR under provisions related to culpable homicide and negligence.
In a distressing development, a young man trapped under the debris reportedly recorded and shared a video appealing for help. A person present at the site told Bhaskar that the trapped man was his friend and had repeatedly called him, asking to be rescued.
Major student hub near Delhi University
Satya Niketan is a prominent student locality near Delhi University’s South Campus, with a large number of students living in PG accommodations and hostels. Several educational institutions, including Sri Venkateswara College, Aryabhatta College, Motilal Nehru College and Maitreyi College, are located in and around the area.
The locality sees heavy movement of students throughout the day. However, there is no official figure available on the total number of students living in Satya Niketan.

According to the figures cited in the report, Delhi recorded 1,133 building-collapse incidents between 2022 and 2025, resulting in 98 deaths.
