Chandigarh: A head constable posted at the Chandigarh Police Headquarters in Sector 9 was shot dead at his Sector 22-A residence in the early hours of Friday. Police said the victim was asleep at home when the incident took place.
The deceased has been identified as Nitin Kumar. His wife and son were present at the house at the time of the incident. His body has been kept at the mortuary of GMSH, Sector 16, for postmortem.
Police officials said the Sector 22 police post received information about the incident at around 8.50am. A police team immediately reached the spot and began the investigation. A forensic team was also called to collect evidence from the scene.
During the investigation, a country-made pistol was recovered from the roof of the house. Police have detained the deceased’s son, Armaan, for questioning. The initial investigation is examining the possibility of a domestic dispute behind the incident.
According to sources, Armaan has a previous criminal record. He was allegedly involved in a February 24-25 road accident in which his speeding Thar collided with a motorcycle, resulting in the deaths of two people. He was out on bail in that case.
Police said a detailed investigation is underway to establish the circumstances and motive behind the shooting. A case has been registered and further details are awaited.
