Chandigarh: Punjab Congress, led by state unit chief Amarinder Singh Raja Warring, staged a protest on Friday demanding the dismissal and arrest of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
Police used water cannons to stop protesters who attempted to march towards the Election Commission office in Chandigarh.
Several Punjab Congress leaders, party MLAs and workers gathered in Sector 17 for the protest. When they tried to cross police barricades and march towards the state Election Commission office, Chandigarh Police stopped them.
Several Congress leaders and workers were subsequently detained.
Before being detained, the protesting leaders alleged irregularities in the election process and claimed that citizens were being deprived of their right to vote.
Raising slogans of “Stop vote theft” along with party workers, Warring demanded Kumar’s dismissal, registration of an FIR against him and his arrest.
“Vote theft is taking place in this country. The BJP is forming governments by stealing votes. The SIR process should be stopped,” Warring said.
Senior Congress leaders, including Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa, Pargat Singh, Balbir Singh Sidhu and Rana KP, participated in the protest.
