Ludhiana: A woman journalist and her journalist husband narrowly escaped a shooting in Ludhiana after a masked assailant allegedly blocked their car and opened fire late on Saturday night. The attacker reportedly chased the couple and fired again near Nanaksar Gurdwara on Ferozepur Road.
According to the couple, journalist Navneet Kaur was returning home with her husband, Gagan Arora of Punjabi Tribune, after Diwali shopping and dinner. Around midnight, a masked man riding a white Activa scooter blocked their car near Gate No. 8 of Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) in the South City area.
When the journalist asked why he had blocked their way, the man allegedly threatened them before pulling out a pistol and firing at their car. Gagan Arora immediately drove away, but the assailant continued to pursue them.
The couple initially thought the attacker had left. However, he allegedly opened fire again at the rear of their car near Nanaksar Gurdwara on Ferozepur Road and continued chasing them up to Malhar Road. The couple eventually managed to reach home safely.
They said they tried contacting the police emergency number 112 after the incident, but the call did not connect. They later contacted Police Commissioner Swapn Sharma, following whose directions a police team reached the spot.
The couple has lodged a complaint at the PAU police station. Police are examining CCTV footage from cameras installed under the Safe City project to identify the attacker.
Navneet said they had previously received threatening calls from foreign numbers. She has sought the attacker’s arrest and a thorough investigation into the motive behind the shooting.
